4. Fluid and medication administration through a CVC
INS standards suggest usage of electronic infusion devices for infusion through CVC.
If a pump is not available, consider an air eliminating filter to avoid an air emboli.
A CVC may use for continues infusion or intermittent infusion. May piggy back into the main line. All procedures must be done under strict aseptic technique.
Clean connections with betadine and close the catheter clamp (except for Groshong) prior to disconnecting or tubing change. Secure the connections with tape.
